The Pittsburgh Pirates acquire Corey Wimberly from the A’s
The Pittsburgh Pirates have acquired 27-year old switch hitting IF/OF Corey Wimberly from the Oakland A’s for 23-year old righty reliever Ryan Kelly. Wimberly played in 135 games in AAA-ball last season and he was 151 of 531 (.284 avg, .727 OPS) with 97 runs scored, 3 homers, 57 RBIs and 56 stolen bases. He has now played in 563 games in his first six years in the minors and he is 668 of 2,215 (.302 avg, .736 OPS) with 412 runs scored, 10 homers, 191 RBIs and 259 stolen bases. Ryan Kelly pitched in 38 games (1 start) in A-ball last season and he was 2-3 with 4 saves, a 4.20 ERA and a 1.19 WHIP. Wimberly will have a shot to make the Pirates’ bench next spring because of his versatility in the field and his speed on the basepaths.
